That this slickly produced and acted movie made any money at all is testimony to just how easy it is to fool way too many members of the public. The audience manipulation begins with the main criminal being written as nastier than the nastiest - just so you will feel good about their hideous death and continues through to those who carry the law to their graves via impossible executions etc. If that sounds good to you and you are willing to let all semblance of intelligence plunge you into a mental void then you might last to the moronic finale. We have the sole survivor of his family's murder unbelievably manipulating the prison system so he can metre out impossible revenge on all who took part on both sides of the law. From here, to the ridiculous finish all we are given is totally farfetched foolishness that defies all logic and insults the viewer's intelligence. From an opening featuring a difficult to watch home invasion and brutal rape/murder - what follows, at times, looks as if it might be heading towards making a statement about a miscarriage of the justice system but, that's as close as it gets. The same over-the-top violence (and each time they see how much more repugnant nastiness can be crammed into it). This nasty movie is another rip-off of a long line of miserable, 'Death Wish type films. Strong performances from both the main stars and lots of good lines, but the plot does them no *ahem* justice." This isn't a criticism however, the action and death scenes are still entertaining without being needlessly exploitative. If anything, it's very tame considering its subject matter. While some scenes may make you squirm and cringe in anticipation, nothing all that graphic or prolonged is shown. Comparing this film to the likes of SAW is like comparing Teletubbies to The Human Centipede. From the opening scenes right to the end.Īccusations that this film is merely torture porn are misleading. This would be fine if the film wasn't so serious about itself, but it is. The main plot was so inconceivable to the point of being totally ludicrous. And if it does fail, it's game over-no flexibility and virtually no room for error. Ending was just awful.Ī big issue in the film and part of the reason why it's hard to take seriously is that the ""villain"" (more of an ""anti-villain"") relies on a masterplan that has way too many potential points of failure. "There's about one humorous moment in the entire film, ""That's what wrenches are for, dumbass!"" The rest of the film takes itself way too seriously, but is still a slick action/thriller film.
